Historical-Technical Museum Peenemünde

On March 15 and 16, the young people visited the Historical-Technical Museum Peenemünde and the memorial landscape of Peenemünde. They worked in small groups to create a virtual learning kit.

The Peenemünde army research facilities were Europe's largest military research centre from 1936 to 1945. Covering an area of 25 km², up to 12,000 people worked simultaneously on innovative weapon systems, such as the world's first cruise missile and the first functional large rocket. Both were produced as weapons of terror against civilians, mostly produced by forced laborers, and from 1944, they were used as "retaliation weapons" during World War II.

The Historical-Technical Museum documents the history of the development and use of these weapons. The exhibitions show who worked in Peenemünde, how the people lived, and why these enormous weapon projects were carried out. (Photos: HTM Peenemünde)

The students researched the topic "People in Peenemünde" using a virtual learning kit. They received biographies of different people who worked in Peenemünde, both voluntarily and involuntarily, and were asked to assess whether these individuals could be seen as perpetrators, victims, or heroes. Beforehand, they took a guided tour of the museum to familiarize themselves with the topic of Peenemünde. They also learned about the human rights abuses that occurred there during the Nazi era.

The following day, the young people took a trip to the memorial landscape of Peenemünde under the motto "Experience the Memorial." They visited, among other sites, the location of the Karlshagen I concentration camp, a place where people were forced to live under inhumane conditions and perform forced labor against their will. This left a strong impression on the students.
